I sat down over lunch recently with Brandon Lackey, owner of the Lineup Room Recording Studio in Parkville, Maryland, just north of Baltimore City. “I make my artists feel comfortable,” the affable 32 year-old mix engineer, producer, and musician told me. “We have established a nice place to create.”

And indeed he has.  Since opening just 10 months ago, the Lineup Room has worked with hundreds of artists directly and/or in partnership with the record label he co-owns (Mania Music Group) with Dwayne Lawson. This has generated notable releases from Greenspan, Kane Mayfield, Grammy Nominee Carolyn Malachi & former Kanye West collaborator Kid Sister. Brandon’s Lineup Room is equipped with professional gear and is able to offer very reasonable hourly rates as low as $30.00 an hour.  The atmosphere in the studio is relaxed, warm, acoustically treated and augmented with a professional polish that many area studios haven’t been able to capture.
Brandon brings the goods to the booth with a solid educational acumen and career background in all aspects of recording, mixing and production. Originally from North Carolina, he moved with his family to Maryland in the 6th grade. Brandon earned a Bachelors from Towson University.

(Brandon’s resume will also soon include being a first time father; I could see the inherit joy behind his smile when he told me this.)
The Lineup Room doesn’t function simply as a ‘drive-up’ recording window for musicians to dine and dash. Brandon typically works with musicians who are “career artists”. While certainly Lackey welcomes talent of all calibers, the Lineup Room excels in recording, and producing, and mixing. “I strive for excellence for every project I touch. I want the highest quality for all my clients.” Lackey notes.
From the solo hip-hop artist to a five-piece band, the Lineup Room is the catalyst for every variety of musician.  Brandon also appreciates the need for a social vibe in regional music landscapes. He pioneered the first Home Recording and Mixers Meetup in the Baltimore area. The Meetup is a free workshop for musicians and artists that would like to improve their sound. The monthly meetings provide an opportunity to learn, share techniques, and network. I attended my first meeting in February and was delighted at the resonance of community spirit as all types of home recording devotees and artists interacted with one another. (If you don’t have a similar group in your area, start one!)
Need some help in learning a particular area of audio? No problem. The Lineup Room offers classes and tutoring in recording, mixing, room acoustics,  and much more. The university level classes can be scheduled around the artist’s calendar. Brandon also offers a custom syllabus based on the student’s individual learning needs and desires. The prices are very reasonable. Baltimore doesn’t have a plethora of affordable qualified sound recording educational platforms; the Lineup Room however, helps to fill that much need void.line up room 2
“Money doesn’t motivate what I do,” Brandon lets me know. Assisting artists in expressing themselves through music makes it easy for him to go to work every day.  Let’s not forget Lackey’s musicianship that he can bring to the table if needed. He plays guitar and bass, and I personally believe that a producer who has never played a scale in his/her life cannot offer the same insight that a producer/musician is able to generate.
Lackey brings all of the above, and much more to the music scene.  This cat is well worth a shout out.  Let’s everyone at Ampslam give him our ear.
The Lineup Room is located at 1900 E. Joppa Rd. Parkville, MD 21234. Brandon Lackey’s contact information: phone - (443) 243-5400; and his email is lineuproom@gmail.com.  The studio is located a short 30 minute drive from BWI airport, and the area has ample lodging for out of town artists.
